Long the LP of myth and legend, Twilight Dreams first came into my life as a fable. As a young trumpet player, the tale of mystical all brass free-dixie re-imaginations of pop standards like Thriller (heard by a friend of a friend of a friend...) seemed just beyond the realm of grasp that when I accidentally stumbled upon a copy of this at a rather shoddy used record store on the L.E.S. shortly after my move here, there was no way i was going to let it pass me by. Enjoy.

The emphasis is on color and sound on this spirited avant-garde album. Four of the five selections feature the adventurous tenor of Frank Lowe with trumpeter Lester Bowie, trombonist Joseph Bowie, cellist Abdul Wadud and either Steve Reid or Bob Shaw on drums. They perform two Lowe originals and two pieces by Thelonious Monk; these renditions are full of surprises and contrasts. In addition, Lowe is heard with an unknown group of local musicians called "the Memphis Four" on "Chu's Blues" in 1974. Open-eared listeners should find this set to be quite stimulating. The debut by Lester Bowie’s Brass Fantasy (an octet consisting of four trumpets, both Craig Harris and Steve Turre on trombones, the French horn of Vincent Chancey, Bob Stewart on tuba and drummer Phillip Wilson) is one of their best recordings. Rather than playing their interpretations of pop tunes (which would be the direction Brass Fantasy would head in the future), this album finds the musicians performing originals by Bowie (including "When the Spirit Returns", Stewart, trumpeters Bruce Purse and Malachi Thompson and the standard title cut. This post is a rip of a CD reissue of two LPs collecting together the music performed by a Murray led quartet at a Manhattan club on New Year's eve in 1977. You can almost smell the seafood in the club's name! It re-unites the rhythm section of Hopkins and Wilson from Murray's earlier India Navigation recording from eighteen months before, and adds Lester Bowie.

Bowie is the link between the three most powerful groupings of musicians who came together in New York in the late 1970s to transform the established free jazz movement into the new music scene. Bowie had been active in both St Lois and Chicago in the collectives that became BAG and AACM respectively, and here in New York he is one of the earliest to play with musicians, who like Murray had come from LA. Inspired by the Black Arts movement and the idea of musical collectives they had nurtured these ideas in major black communities in the US, but ultimately moved to new York, often after sojourns in Europe.

Bob Cummins was one of those jazz lovers and small-scale entrepreneurs who captured much of the vibrant energy of the scene on his India Navigation label in the 1970s. He seemed to earn his living as a lawyer, and spent it on recording live performances in the lofts and small venues, and then releasing the recordings. He died in September 2000, but small bursts of CD reissues seem to appear from time to time. Not sure why and how, but I'm always glad of the opportunity to listen to more. This one seems to be out of print as far as I can tell. It was certainly hard to find a copy when it was first re-released.

I haven't got the original vinyl LPs, but the CD liner notes say there's nearly seven minutes taken off 'Santa Barbara And Crenshaw Follies', and by my calculations there's possibly over two minutes less on 'For Walter Norris' if the timings on LP and CD can be believed (they can't usually). The CD notes also talk about an unreleased track. many of these tracks were staples of Murray's repertoire, and you get the usual personal dedications, rich textures and sometimes inspired themes. I'm very fond of this recording. I hope you enjoy it too.

A transitional album by Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy, this Japanese CD finds the tentet (four trumpets, two trombones, French horn, tuba, drums and percussion) performing three jazz pieces by the group's former trumpeter Bruce Purse plus eccentric interpretations of "My Way," "Honky Tonk" and James Brown's "I Got You." With such top players as trombonists Steve Turre and Frank Lacy (who sings "I Got You" as best he can) and trumpeter E.J. Allen having solo space along with the distorted sounds of the leader/trumpeter, this set certainly has its interesting moments, although it is a bit erratic.

Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy had one basic joke that was repeated over and over again: the idea that any pop tune, including contemporary ones, could be turned into jazz and interpreted by the unusual group. Serious Fun is one of the ensemble's earlier records and the material is better than usual, with two Billie Holiday songs (including a highly expressive "Strange Fruit") and Rahsaan Roland Kirk's "Inflated Tear" co-existing with such songs as "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," "Smooth Operator," "Don't Worry, Be Happy," and Marcus Miller's "Da Butt." Brass Fantasy, comprised here of four trumpets, French horn, two trombones, tuba, two drums, and percussion, was always an intriguing concept, and on this particular project it is mostly quite successful and full of Lester Bowie's wit.
