In what promises to be a breakthrough achievement in a long and celebrated career, jazz impresario Arturo Sandoval's collection A Time For Love will be released by Concord Jazz. The album features classical compositions for orchestra and jazz trio by Grammy-winning arranger Jorge Calandrelli along with a sprinkling of American jazz standards by composers including Gershwin and Chaplin.

The Havana-born Sandoval, a multiple Grammy-winning horn player, has been yearning to do this album for decades. "It's been twenty years since I came to live in the United States," he explains, "and practically every year, with every record label who's signed me, I've asked to make this style album. ‘Let me play softly,' I said. ‘Let me play ballads with big orchestration behind me. Let me hear the violins and violas, the oboes and the flutes. Let me be inspired by a symphonic setting."

However, record labels were reluctant to endorse this type of work by an artist known internationally for his own style of bebop-influenced Afro-Cuban jazz and for his technical precision. So, he took matters into his own hands by recording 20 tracks in his home studio that he described as speaking "the language of love." A superb keyboardist as well as trumpet player, Sandoval played all the instruments and suggested the strings through a synthesizer.

Just when Sandoval was convinced that he would have to release the album himself, a meeting was held with Concord executive Gregg Field, who immediately embraced the project concept and agreed to come aboard as the album's producer. "Over the next month, we discussed different ideas. As a foundation, Arturo had heard the Shelly Berg Trio album Blackbird and wanted that sound and sensitivity," said Field. "I suggested Jorge Calandrelli as the arranger for the orchestra and Arturo, who had worked with Jorge in the past, loved the idea. Jorge has tremendous experience with multiple genres including classical cross-over having produced and arranged among others, YoYo Ma's Soul of the Tango and Obrigato Brazil."

While the album features selections from the Great American Songbook of jazz standards, the focus is reinterpreting the works of classical composers including Ravel, Feure and Piazolla. Classically trained himself, Sandoval was influenced by such artists as Maynard Ferguson, Conrad Gozzo, Woody Herman, Charlie Parker and most importantly, his mentor Dizzy Gillespie.

The album reflects all of these diverse influences, but in particular Sandoval cites trumpet player Bobby Hackett, best known for his work with the multi-layered arrangements of the Jackie Gleason orchestra, and the album Clifford Brown with Strings, as the record's inspirational touchstones. "These were lush records that thrilled my imagination. They made me realize that the trumpet, for all its brash power, can be a romantic and intimate instrument of love, says Sandoval.

A highlight of the album is the track featuring Sandoval and guest trumpeter Chris Botti on Ravel's "Pavane for a Dead Princess." Says Field about the collaboration, "Having two of the most famous trumpet players on the planet in the same room playing together was an event unto itself!"

Another highlight features vocalist Monica Mancini singing on the Astor Piazolla composition "Oblivion," which debuts an English lyric written for her for the recording. Sandoval also sings on the album in both Italian and English ("Estate" and "Smile").
Truly a melding of classical repertoire with jazz, A Time For Love is a major departure for Sandoval, yet immediately familiar in its timeless ballads. "The song selection process was something that I'd begun when I was a kid back in Cuba," says the artist, referring to how while growing up he would surreptitiously listen to the officially banned Voice of America radio broadcasts. "This is a project of a lifetime, and no one could be more thrilled than me to have this precious opportunity.

This two CD set features the complete recordings of Jimmy Cleveland as a leader. Trombonist Cleveland closely follows in the footsteps of the great J.J. Johnson. Fluid, dynamic solos over the great ensemble writing of Quincy Jones, Benny Golson and others. A must have for fans of trombone and mid-'50s post-Bop. One of the most exciting jazz trombonists of the 1950s, Jimmy Cleveland had a technique equal to that of Bill Watrous (who would not emerge until a decade later), an enthusiastic style that could hold its own with Frank Rosolino, and was the first important new voice on the trombone to emerge after J.J. Johnson.

He led four albums during 1955-1959 before disappearing into the world of studio work. With the exception of six isolated selections from the era (including four for Epic), the four records are all of his sessions as a leader and they are reissued in full on this two-CD set. The music on Complete Recordings is drawn from the EmArcy/Mercury catalog. Cleveland is featured with three overlapping octets arranged by Quincy Jones, on two brass-oriented sets that have a prominent role for Don Butterfield's tuba, and an album with trumpeter Art Farmer and tenor saxophonist Benny Golson from 1959 that finds him at the peak of his powers. Other sidemen include trumpeter Ernie Royal, Jerome Richardson on various reeds, tenor saxophonist Lucky Thompson and drummer Max Roach, with arrangements by the likes of Ernie Wilkins, Benny Golson and Gigi Gryce. The music is in the hard bop vein but rarely predictable, with Cleveland getting several showcases that display his impressive virtuosity, along with pieces in which he interacts with his all-star sidemen. This is a highly recommended set that nearly comprises all of the musical legacy of the great Jimmy Cleveland.

One of the first tuba players to lead his own recording session in a bebop setting, Ray Draper was only 16 when he recorded the music on this CD reissue, his debut. Teamed in a sextet with trumpeter Webster Young (also making his recording debut), altoist Jackie McLean, pianist Mal Waldron, bassist Spanky DeBrest, and drummer Ben Dixon, Draper fits in pretty well.

His solos are sometimes a touch awkward rhythmically and it takes one a little while to get used to his sound in this setting but, overall, this is a successful effort. The fairly modern sextet performs straight-ahead originals by Draper, Young, and Waldron in addition to the standard "You're My Thrill."

This package contains the original, studio-concocted Miles Davis set that Miller mostly composed. There's also a previously unreleased gig from that year's Nice Jazz festival, delivered by a powerful octet including the late Bob Berg on tenor sax. As liner-note writer Ashley Kahn points out, I made an about-turn over this music in the 80s, from first doubting it as bland funk to reconsidering it as late-flowering Miles, creativity galvanised by Miller's input. But more importantly, Kahn's fine essay offers insights into Miller's assessment that producing finished studio tracks for Miles to blow on didn't work: you had to leave them as rougher sonic sketches and let his improvising bring them to life.

The original Tutu is essential for admirers of the trumpeter's late work who don't already own it, but the live show includes some anonymous non-Tutu material and too much down-the-line rock-blues guitar from Robben Ford, and despite robust tenor-blowing from Berg and an affecting (and startlingly early-jazzy) trumpet solo on New Blues, this isn't the kind of live Miles show that makes you wish you'd been there – unlike much of the music on his 1973-91 Montreux festival box set.

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1957 release from the Jazz trombonist, Johnson's second complete album ever in a quartet format. The sessions, with master accompaniment by Tommy Flanagan, Paul Chambers and Max Roach, went so well that material for two albums was gathered (the other album being First Class). As an added bonus, there are two quartet tracks taken from Johnson's previous quintet sessions, as well as five quintet tracks that complete all of the master takes from the latter of those sessions.

When you hear this remarkable quartet - led, but not overshadowed by, J.J.Johnson - it's clear that this is one of the absolute classic bop sessions. What a tragedy that it is not accorded the same level of attention that many of their peers (on sax, trumpet, piano, ...) receive. I can't remember the last time I heard a jazz station feature a trombonist. Some of the bonus tracks are included on other CD releases, and JJ had recorded a number of these tunes with other groups, but the interplay among JJ, Tommy, Paul, and Max make this recording a must-have.
