In spite of their very long careers in jazz, brothers Hank, Thad and Elvin Jones made relatively few recordings together; this Leonard Feather-produced date got the three of them into the studio and added to the gimmick by including Eddie Jones (no relation) on bass, and performing exclusively works by Thad or Isham Jones (also no relation). The music that's stood the test of time includes Thad's often-recorded "Three and One," which was evidently written for this session, and Isham Jones' best-known works "It Had to Be You," and the perennial favorite "There Is No Greater Love." Thad's rich flugelhorn is as strong as on any date he ever recorded, while Hank's playing is a little more reserved than usual, and Elvin, known for his fierce attack, sticks mainly to brushes. The only song which fails to come off is the mediocre title track, where Hank switches off between piano and organ. Like many other long out-of-print LPs that have reappeared as Verve CD's, this 1999 reissue is, unfortunately, in the Verve Elite limited-edition series, so don't wait long to acquire it. ~ Ken Dryden

Housed in a heavyweight pasted picture sleeve with few signs ofage, original company catalogue inner and excellent condition vinyl. The vinyl shows one or two faint hairlines not deep enough to effect play - a nice example LA16037).

With his brother Branford (who doubles here on tenor and soprano) often closely emulating Wayne Shorter and the rhythm section (pianist Kenny Kirkland, bassist Charnett Moffett, and drummer Jeff Watts) sounding a bit like the famous Herbie Hancock-Ron Carter-Tony Williams trio, Wynton is heard at the head of what was essentially an updated version of the mid- to late-’60s Miles Davis Quintet (despite Stanley Crouch’s pronouncements in his typically absurd liner notes about Marsalis’ individuality). The music is brilliantly played and displays what the “Young Lions” movement was really about: young musicians choosing to explore acoustic jazz and to extend the innovations of the pre-fusion modern mainstream style. Marsalis would develop his own sound a few years later, but even at age 23 he had few close competitors.

They released two records on the German jazz label ECM: a self-titled release in 1979 and Playing, recorded live, a year later. These discs were bookended by a pair of discs on the Italian Black Saint label: a studio record from 1976 (also self-titled) and 1987's One For Blackwell, capturing the quartet's final concert at a birthday celebration for Blackwell.

Haden is the only surviving member of the quartet, Blackwell having died in 1992, Cherry in 1995 and Redman in 2006.

This is an unusual album, in that it presents the results of what is probably the first modern jazz record date to take place in New Orleans. The Adderleys and Sam Jones are reinforced by three excellent young musicians, Nat Perrilliat (tenor), Ellis Marsalis (piano) and James Black— the latter being an outstanding drummer, influenced by Elvin Jones more than anyone else. Even if the other two newcomers are less than outstanding, they illustrate something I have long suspected —that there are almost as many good musicians (if not brilliant ones) who never see the inside of a recording studio as there are modest talents who are constantly thrust upon us.
Nat Adderley is in fine form on this record, playing inventive solos on most tracks. As might be expected, most of the tracks are blues of one sort or another, several written by the locals. An exception is R.S.V.P., a pleasing ballad feature for Nat. Adderley addicts will want this, of course, and others are advised to hear it for James Black.

Live at the Jazz Standard showcases trumpeter Dave Douglas — on cornet this time! — and his quintet performing Live at the NYC club the Jazz Standard on various nights in December of 2006. Joining Douglas here are tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin, Fender Rhodes specialist Uri Caine, bassist James Genus and drummer Clarence Penn. Originally released as complete download-only sets on Douglas' own Greenleaf Label website, here Douglas has pruned the sets down to 18 cuts over two discs. Furthermore, he's also focused the album on original compositions never before released on album. In that sense, fans of Douglas' past work with this ensemble on such studio efforts as 2002's Infinite and 2006's Meaning and Mystery will surely dig this stuff as it essentially plays as an all new recording and not just a live documentation of the quintet. In fact, disc two focuses on compositions Douglas wrote while delving into the iconic work of innovative pocket-trumpeter Don Cherry and were initially intended for inclusion on Meaning and Mystery. This is soulful, visceral, moody and propulsive post-bop that often leans heavily toward late-'60s and '70s modal and free jazz.

''One of the great swing trombonists, Lawrence Brown tends to be underrated because he spent so much of his career with Duke Ellington's Orchestra. Actually, Brown's initial solos with Ellington upset some of Duke's fans because it was feared that his virtuosity did not fit into a band where primitive effects and mutes were liberally utilized. But over time, Brown carved out his own place in the Ellington legacy.
Lawrence Brown learned piano, violin, and tuba before deciding to stick to the trombone. He recorded with Paul Howard's Quality Serenaders (1929-1930) and Louis Armstrong (with Les Hite's Orchestra in 1930) in Los Angeles before joining Ellington in 1932, staying until 1951 when he left to join Johnny Hodges' new small group. After 1955, Brown became a studio musician in New York, but then spent 1960-1970 back with Ellington (where he reluctantly had to play some solos with a plunger mute) before retiring. Although he only led two albums of his own (a 1955-1956 outing for Clef, 'Slide Trombone' and 1965's 'Inspired Abandon' for Impulse), Brown was well-featured on many recordings with Ellington through the years; "The Sheik of Araby" (1932) and "Rose of the Rio Grande" (1938) were favorites.''

I think this is a great album, but it's one of those that needs to grow on you. The more you hear it, the more you hear in it.

Don't let the 'Dixie' in the title put you off (I know some jazzers stear clear of this branch of our music!). This is so well played and infectious that you just can't help but enjoy it, and there is so much more than your average New Orleans work-out contained within. These are master musicians, on top form, enjoying themselves. I love it!!
