This two-record set combines separate sets by Ruby Braff and Red Norvo from the same 1969 Paris studio session, though both musicians use the identical rhythm section of pianist George Wein, bassist Larry Ridley, drummer Don Lamond, and guitarist Barney Kessel, who has many nice solos in both sessions. Braff, playing cornet, pays tribute to Louis Armstrong throughout his performance, ranging from a brisk "Cornet Chop Suey" and Satchmo's perennial theme song "When It's Sleepy Time Down South" to pretty ballads like "(Was I to Blame For) Falling in Love With You?" and the swinging "I've Got a Feelin' I'm Fallin'," which features some nice exchanges between Braff and Kessel. Norvo's soft mallet technique contrasts with most of the players who have followed him on the vibraphone. "Spider's Webb" has fallen into obscurity but Norvo swings it mightily. He throws a curve to anyone expecting nothing but swing with the bossa nova megahit "The Girl From Ipanema." Norvo ends his session with an inspired treatment of "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams." Strangely, the producers evidently didn't think of adding each leader to the other's set for one number, though they are pictured together in the studio on the front cover of this long unavailable release. “One of the great swing/Dixieland cornetists, Ruby Braff went through long periods of his career unable to find work because his music was considered out-of-fashion, but his fortunes improved by the 1970s. A very expressive player who in later years liked to build his solos up to a low note, Braff’s playing was instantly recognizable within seconds.
Braff mostly worked around Boston in the late ‘40s. He teamed up with Pee Wee Russell when the clarinetist was making a comeback (they recorded live for Savoy), and after moving to New York in 1953, he fit easily into a variety of Dixieland and mainstream settings. Braff recorded for Vanguard as a leader, and with Vic Dickenson, Buck Clayton, and Urbie Green. He was one of the stars of Buck Clayton’s Columbia jam sessions, and in the mid-‘50s worked with Benny Goodman. But, despite good reviews and occasional recordings, work was hard for Braff to come by at times. In the 1960s, he was able to get jobs by being with George Wein’s Newport All-Stars and at jazz festivals, but it was not until the cornetist formed a quartet with guitarist George Barnes, in 1973, that he became more secure. Afterward, Braff was heard in many small-group settings, including duets with Dick Hyman and Ellis Larkins (he had first met up with the latter in the 1950s), quintets with Scott Hamilton, and matching wits with Howard Alden. He remained one of the greats of mainstream jazz until his death in 2003.”

“This recording proved to be Ruby’s last studio recording for Arbors Records. He took sick while touring in Scotland in August 2002 and passed away on February 9, 2003. Ruby left us a legacy represented by his uncompromising standards, musical taste, creative imagination and consummate artistry – nice tunes, beautifully played. He achieved what only some musicians ever accomplish by developing a unique and immediately recognizable style. His standards and dedication were legend. After all, he wanted to be remembered for his music, not for his life.

Between 1930 and 1940 Bunny Berigan played for many orchestras, including Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Hal Kemp, Paul Whiteman, Red Norvo and Adrian Rollini. His trumpet voice did much to aid in their success. However, when it came to running his own band success was short lived, due to Berigan simply not having the business acumen needed for such a task. He will of course always be remembered for his magnificent recording of 'I Can't Get Started'.

Ruby Braff's 1957 tribute to trumpet great Bunny Berigan is only appropriate, as he has long since gone on to establish himself as one of the modern masters of swing. His band includes pianist Nat Pierce, guitarist Steve Jordan, clarinetist Pee Wee Russell, trombonist Benny Morton, tenor saxophonist Dick Hafer, bassist Walter Page (in one of his last recordings prior to his death), and drummer Buzzy Drootin. Braff's passionate, always-melodic solos contrast with Russell's rather distinctive approach to the clarinet, while the rhythm section is dominated by Page's fat-toned bass. The leader's approach to 'I Can't Get Started,' a song forever associated with Berigan, remains fresh decades later. Most of the selections were reissued on the since-deleted Bluebird CD This Is My Lucky Day, so finding a copy of this valuable music remains somewhat challenging.

This is a great Album by Vic Dickenson, another of those musicians who recorded with numerous top stars during his career. You don't see that many dates where he is leader, but the two sessions included here are absolutely top class. Everyone gets plenty of solo space, and they certainly make good use of it. Once again, highly recommended.
