Fresh Sound FSR CD 382

This album is hard-bop heaven for trumpeters. Billed as a tribute to Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown and Booker Little, it features Woody Shaw, Kenny Dorham, Bill Hardman, Blue Mitchell, Richard Williams and the little-known Walter Kelly. The presence of so much concentrated brass firepower naturally brings out the competitive spirit. Shaw—23 at the time—dazzles with explosive pentatonics. His work on an uptempo version of “What’s New” answers the song’s title with a conception that would eventually solidify his place as an innovator. Dorham, on “Bags Groove” and “Confirmation,” shows off his mastery of bop’s harmonic language. You can hear how he had influenced Shaw at the time.

Mitchell takes a more lyrical, controlled approach to the proceedings and scores via contrast.

Hardman and Williams—lesser lights in the hierarchy—acquit themselves well in the contest. Kelly, more erratic, nevertheless holds his ground. The rhythm section—pianist Lonnie Liston Smith, bassist Peck Morrison and drummer Walter Perkins—is spirited and aggressive (especially Perkins on the nearly 20-minute “Sweet Clifford”). I wonder if such a tribute were held today, who would be called and whether the results.

Amazon.com:
While at the time Clifford Brown was associated with East Coast jazz and the burgeoning hard-bop movement, these 1954 Los Angeles recordings show that he was just as much at home and just as welcome in the midst of the West Coast's cool school. Jack Montrose wrote the arrangements for this septet, and the band is perfectly formed to showcase Brown's brilliant trumpet sound, contrasting it with the lower-pitched but lighter sounds of Zoot Sims's tenor saxophone, Bob Gordon's baritone, and Stu Williamson's valve trombone. Brown's best-known compositions, "Daahoud" and "Joy Spring," are heard in their debut recordings here, and they're well suited to the Montrose treatment, with Brown's scintillating bop lines moving fluidly within the developed ensemble harmony. The other horns have some fine solo moments, but it's Brown who stands out, the precision of his attack highlighting the subtlety and invention of his solos. Pianist Russ Freeman and drummer Shelly Manne contribute tasteful support throughout, and the new remastering by Rudy Van Gelder highlights both the brassy sheen of Brown's playing and the lightly grained reeds. --Stuart Broomer

Clifford Brown - Max Roach Quintet
Clifford Brown on trumpet
Sonny Rollins on tenor saxophone
Richie Powell at the piano
George Morrow on bass
and The World's Greatest Drummer Max Roach

"I play the trumpet, my name is Clifford Brown."
With these simple and unpretentious words, Brownie introduced himself to the audience of the Cotton Club in Cleveland, Ohio, on May 28, 1956.
May 28 was the opening night of a week-long engagement for the Max Roach-Clifford Brown Quintet, featuring Sonny Rollins on tenor sax, Richie Powell (Bud Powell's younger brother) on piano, and George Morrow on bass. Despite the exceptional talent of the individual band members, the quintet proved to be more than the sum of its parts. The Cleveland Cotton Club performances contained on this package - issued here for the first time ever - were recorded on amateur equipment and include sets played by the quintet on May 28, May 29 and June 1, 1956. As a bonus to these amazing performances, we present another previously unissued set: a radio broadcast by the same quintet coming from the Town Casino, in Buffalo, New York, recorded on February 26, 1956.

This four-CD set has the exact same music as an earlier Mosaic five-LP box, but is highly recommended to those listeners not already possessing the limited-edition set. Trumpeter Clifford Brown is heard on the most significant recordings from the first half of his tragically brief career. Whether co-leading a date with altoist Lou Donaldson, playing as a sideman with trombonist J.J. Johnson, interacting with an all-star group of West Coast players, or jamming with the first (although unofficial) edition of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (a two-disc live performance with a quintet that also includes the drummer/leader, Donaldson and pianist Horace Silver), Brown is the main star. Highlights are many, including versions of "Brownie Speaks," Elmo Hope's "De-Dah," "Cherokee," "Get Happy," "Daahoud" and "Joy Spring." The attractive packaging, with its 40 pages of text and many rare pictures, is an added bonus.
