Fresh Sound FSR CD 382

This album is hard-bop heaven for trumpeters. Billed as a tribute to Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown and Booker Little, it features Woody Shaw, Kenny Dorham, Bill Hardman, Blue Mitchell, Richard Williams and the little-known Walter Kelly. The presence of so much concentrated brass firepower naturally brings out the competitive spirit. Shaw—23 at the time—dazzles with explosive pentatonics. His work on an uptempo version of “What’s New” answers the song’s title with a conception that would eventually solidify his place as an innovator. Dorham, on “Bags Groove” and “Confirmation,” shows off his mastery of bop’s harmonic language. You can hear how he had influenced Shaw at the time.

Mitchell takes a more lyrical, controlled approach to the proceedings and scores via contrast.

Hardman and Williams—lesser lights in the hierarchy—acquit themselves well in the contest. Kelly, more erratic, nevertheless holds his ground. The rhythm section—pianist Lonnie Liston Smith, bassist Peck Morrison and drummer Walter Perkins—is spirited and aggressive (especially Perkins on the nearly 20-minute “Sweet Clifford”). I wonder if such a tribute were held today, who would be called and whether the results.

Blue Mitchell - Blue's Blues 1972

Blue MITCHELL - Blues' Blues 1972
MRL 374
MP3@256

At the time that this Mainstream LP was recorded, Blue Mitchell was the featured trumpeter with John Mayall's blues group. Mayall returned the favor for Blue's set, playing harmonica with an electric octet headed by Mitchell. Among the sidemen are Herman Riley (on tenor and flute), keyboardist Joe Sample and guitarist Freddy Robinson. The material (all obscure originals) is primarily blues-oriented, and the music overall is listenable and funky, but not particularly memorable. Just an average date from these fine musicians.

Recorded in the midst of Blue Mitchell's 1960s tenure at Blue Note, BOSS HORN is a solid album of top-notch hard bop. Here the trumpeter leads an ensemble with a formidable horn line that includes trombonist Julian Priester and baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams. Mitchell's strong trumpet playing is always front-and-center, but BOSS HORN is particularly notable for its pianists. Cedar Walton appears on the album's first four tracks, and his jaunty work on Mitchell's own celebratory, neo-Latin "O Mama Enit" is a highlight. A young Chick Corea proves to be the real scene-stealer, however, with his two self-penned tracks, "Tones for Joan's Bones" and "Straight Up and Down." Both of these adventurous tunes are performed on Corea's '68 debut, which is titled after the former song. For fans of any of the aforementioned musicians, especially Mitchell and Corea, this is an underrated gem of a record that provides a bridge between Mitchell's more straightforward bop and Corea's groundbreaking solo work.
