Something in Your Smile
Something in your smile speaks to me
Something in your eyes shows me the way
And helps me to say the things
That I could never say to you
Something in your voice sings to me
Something in your laugh makes me rejoice
And there is no choice except
To let my thoughts all stray to you and stray to you they do
Something in you is rich and rare
And there is something more
Something in you is everything
That I never knew before
Something of your charm clings to me
Something of your warmth shows me the way
And made me a part of you for just a little while
So think of me as something in your smile
Think of me as something in your smile
Lyrics by Dizzy Gillespie

circle of fifths
This is a musical concept that is important to practice.
As an aspiring musician, it is imperative to master this concept and the only way to do this is through effective, diligent and focused practice.
Tips : Don’t feel as if you need to know every key all at once
1. Start with C major and work through the major scale in one octave
2. After this is mastered, begin to work through the scale intervallically.
For example: start with C and play through the scale by playing the next interval all the way through,
ie; C-D, C-E, C-F… etc ascending and descending.
3. Begin to work through the scale in thirds, ie; C-E, D-F, E-G, etc. ascending and descending
4. Now in fourths
5. Begin to play the scale starting on a different interval each time, ie; E-E, F-F, etc. ascending and descending
6. Add octave two and repeat steps 2 through 5
7. Move to the next key and begin the six step process
It is my recommendation that the student learns the circle symmetrically, ie; after one flat, learn one sharp key, etc...
After all major keys are mastered, move on to the minor keys (relative to the major) and begin the 7 step process

Blue Mitchell - Blue's Blues 1972
At the time that this Mainstream LP was recorded, Blue Mitchell was the featured trumpeter with John Mayall's blues group. Mayall returned the favor for Blue's set, playing harmonica with an electric octet headed by Mitchell. Among the sidemen are Herman Riley (on tenor and flute), keyboardist Joe Sample and guitarist Freddy Robinson. The material (all obscure originals) is primarily blues-oriented, and the music overall is listenable and funky, but not particularly memorable. Just an average date from these fine musicians.

Lee Morgan - Caramba! 1968
This was one of the most obscure of all Lee Morgan Blue Note albums. A transitional effort that finds the trumpeter gradually moving beyond hard bop into more modal music, the date starts out with the surprisingly derivative title cut which is very similar to Eddie Harris' "Listen Here." Of the other selections, "Soulita" has the catchiest melody while Cal Massey's slow ballad "A Baby's Smile" was previously unreleased. While Morgan and his fine rhythm section (pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Billy Higgins) are in typically swinging form, Caramba is most notable for featuring the young Bennie Maupin. Sticking exclusively to tenor, Maupin (who would be much more distinctive within a year) mixes together Joe Henderson and Wayne Shorter in winning fashion.

A transitional album by Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy, this Japanese CD finds the tentet (four trumpets, two trombones, French horn, tuba, drums and percussion) performing three jazz pieces by the group's former trumpeter Bruce Purse plus eccentric interpretations of "My Way," "Honky Tonk" and James Brown's "I Got You." With such top players as trombonists Steve Turre and Frank Lacy (who sings "I Got You" as best he can) and trumpeter E.J. Allen having solo space along with the distorted sounds of the leader/trumpeter, this set certainly has its interesting moments, although it is a bit erratic.
