The Boss Of The Soul Stream Trombone

AMG REVIEW:
An obscure set by trombonist Curtis Fuller that was originally put out by the Warwick label, this otherwise unremarkable set is sparked by the inclusion of the young trumpeter Freddie Hubbard (recently arrived from Indianapolis) and tenor saxophonist Yusef Lateef. With veteran bebopper Walter Bishop on piano and two players from Quincy Jones' big band (bassist Buddy Catlett and drummer Stu Martin), Fuller performs four originals and three standards (including "If I Were a Bell"). Hubbard's fiery statements often steal the show. ?

AMG REVIEW:
Review by Scott Yanow

Valeri Ponomarev, one of the most underrated trumpeters in jazz, has a style based in the hard bop tradition of Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard, yet he keeps an open mind toward newer developments. On this CD, he is teamed with tenor saxophonist Bob Berg (whose soulful post-bop style has long been influenced by Michael Brecker), the little-known but talented Philadelphia-based pianist Sid Simmons, bassist Ken Walker, and drummer Billy Hart. The quintet performs six of the trumpeter's tricky yet swinging originals and a reharmonized rendition of "We'll Be Together Again." Ponomarev's very impressive range (hitting high notes with little difficulty), full sound and inventive ideas clearly inspire his sidemen. Berg puts plenty of passion into his solos, and Simmons makes one wish that he were recorded more extensively. Easily recommended to modern straight-ahead jazz collectors.

REVIEW
Russian expatriate Valery Ponomarev has been an impressive trumpeter from the time he arrived in the U.S. after fleeing his homeland. This 2005 session pairs him with several younger musicians, including seasoned tenor saxophonist Don Braden, bassist Martin Zenker, and Juilliard student Jerome Jennings, who the leader compares favorably with veteran drummers. With Braden stuck in traffic, Ponomarev improvised a blues to warm up with the others and ended up with the peppy opener "You Dig, I Hear You, You Know What I Mean, Etc." The trumpeter makes use of the full range of his instrument in his expressive solo, also trading licks with Jennings. The blend of trumpet and tenor sax in Lee Morgan's slinky "Party Time" gives the piece a bit of an eerie flavor. His arrangement of "Chelsea Bridge" has more of a mournful air than the typical bittersweet setting of this landmark Billy Strayhorn composition. Ornette Coleman's "The Blessing" proves very accessible and features some great interplay and a bit of arco bass by Zenker. Ponomarev's Latin-tinged "Sale on Love," a barely disguised reworking of Cole Porter's "Love for Sale," is a harmonically rich extended performance. The lack of a pianist is never a problem, as the musicians filled in the missing chords in their heads as they played their hearts out throughout this rewarding studio date.

REVIEW
Trumpeter Johnny Coles, best-known for his association with Charles Mingus in 1964, made his recording debut as a leader on this Epic session which was reissued on CD in 1995 by Koch. A bop-based trumpeter with a lyrical sound of his own, Coles is showcased here with an excellent quartet (Kenny Drew or Randy Weston on piano, bassist Peck Morrison and drummer Charlie Persip). He is in top form on a pair of standards (including "If I Should Lose You"), his own blues "Room 3" and four Weston originals; the reissue adds an alternate take of "Hi-Fly" to the original program. A fine outing.

Biography by Chris Kelsey
Conrad Herwig is one of New York's more prominent young progressive/mainstream trombonists. He has recorded and/or performed with a number of famous leaders, including, but not limited to, Joe Henderson, Jack DeJohnette, and Paquito D'Rivera. Herwig is an alumni of the famous University of North Texas jazz program, an experience that obviously prepared him well as a big band player. He began his professional career in the early '80s with Clark Terry's big band; stints with Buddy Rich, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Mel Lewis, and others were to follow. Herwig became an increasingly in-demand sideman in the '90s. He is an accomplished pedagogue, having taught clinics and workshops around the world. Herwig is on the faculty at William Patterson College in New Jersey. His seventh album as a leader, The Latin Side of John Coltrane, emphasizes an affinity for South American idioms. Criss Cross followed in 1998 and a year later, Herwig resurfaced with Osteology. Unseen Universe followed in fall 2000.

Review by Scott Yanow
Trombonist Conrad Herwig, who had previously recorded The Latin Side of John Coltrane, is at it again. Another Kind of Blue has versions of the five songs from Miles Davis' Kind of Blue ("So What," "Freddie Freeloader," "Blue in Green," "All Blues," and "Flamenco Sketches") plus "Petits Machins" performed by a Latin jazz nonet. The results are quite enjoyable and, with the exception of the repertoire and a couple orchestrated sections for the ensemble (the introduction of "So What" by Bill Evans and Paul Chambers, and Davis' trumpet solo on "Freddie Freeloader"), the music has little connection to the original Kind of Blue with Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Cannonball Adderley. Instead, the transformation serves as a good excuse for the all-star group to romp and come up with fresh ideas. Herwig, trumpeter Brian Lynch, baritonist Mario Rivera, and flutist Dave Valentin have their moments, but Paquito D'Rivera on alto and clarinet constantly steals solo honors; he is too exciting to be denied. The horns are inspired by a blazing rhythm section consisting of pianist Edsel Gomez, bassist John Benitiz, drummer Robby Ameen, and percussionist Richie Flores. It is particularly interesting hearing such unlikely material as "Blue in Green" and "Flamenco Sketches" turned into Afro-Cuban jazz. Another Kind of Blue is quite successful on its own terms and well worth picking up.

REVIEW:
Trumpeter Terence Blanchard's tribute to Billie Holiday is a rather melancholy and often downbeat affair. Sounding less original than usual (he displays a strong Wynton Marsalis influence and also hints at times at both Miles Davis and Thad Jones), there is little joy to these renditions of Lady Day material other than the second half of "I Cried for You." The trumpeter's arrangements for the unswinging string section is occasionally oppressive, sometimes border on muzak and tends to weigh down the music. The only bright spot are the five fine vocals by Jeanie Bryson, who wisely does not try to sound like Holiday and comes across quite well. Otherwise this is a disappointing outing.

Bunk Johnson

Willie Gary "Bunk" Johnson
(ca. 1879 or 1889 – July 7, 1949)
was a prominent early New Orleans jazz trumpet player in the early years of the 20th century who enjoyed a revived career in the 1940s.

This piece of paper comes from the collection of Boston jazz aficionado Samuel Prescott, and it’s an absolute Who’s Who of jazz stars who came through that city in the Forties. The Prescott papers (and discs) are now held by the University of New Hampshire Library, and they took good care of this piece of paper, crowded with signatures of great men and women:

“The Sidewinder”

Lee Morgan
July 10, 1938 – February 19, 1972

Lee Morgan’s case proves how fatal love can really be. The popular hard bop trumpeter was shot by his common-law wife on February 19, 1972, after an argument between sets while performing at Slugs’, a jazz club in New York City’s East Village. Morgan was shot in the heart and died instantly. He was 33 years old.

Cy Touff was one of the few specialists on the bass trumpet, an instrument that does not sound all that different from a valve trombone. This 1998 reissue CD finds Touff in two different settings. The first four numbers feature an octet (comprised of trumpeters Harry "Sweets" Edison and Conrad Gozzo, Touff, tenor-saxophonist Richie Kamuca, Matt Utal on reeds, pianist Russ Freeman, bassist Leroy Vinnegar and drummer Chuck Flores) performing three Johnny Mandel arrangements and one by Ernie Wilkins ("What Am I Here For"). "Keester Parade" uses a familiar Sweets Edison line ("Centerpiece") while Tiny Kahn's "TNT" is easily recognizable as the basis for Dave Frishberg's "Can't Take You Nowhere." Touff, Kamuca and Edison are the main soloists on the cool-toned Basie-oriented date. The remainder of the CD is from the following day and puts more of the focus on Touff's soloing in a quintet with Kamuca and pianist Pete Jolly. Touff and Kamuca blend together very well and play off each other in winning fashion. This music also tips its cap constantly to Basie (Jolly purposely plays a few phrases like Count) with "Prez-ence" finding the two horns playing Lester Young's recorded solo on "You're Driving Me Crazy." One of only 2 1/2 albums led by Cy Touff, this CD is definitive of Touff and also notable for featuring Richie Kamuca in superb form.
