Urbie Green – The Complete Persuasive Trombone – Big Band & Sextet (1961-62)

Urbie Green – The Complete Persuasive Trombone – Big Band & Sextet (1961-1962)
Format: MP4
Total Time: 71
Min.
Size: 66MB

“This killer set combines both volumes of master Urbie Green’s early-’60s The Persuasive Trombone of Urbie Green recordings on a single disc. The sessions for these dates took place between 1960 and 1962, and featured two different bands. The first sessions feature cats like Hal McKusick, Milt Hinton, Doc Severinsen, a very young Rolf Kuhn, and Detroit baritone boss Pepper Adams. The track list is impressive as well: Johnny Mercer’s”Dream,” a romping reading of “I Can’t Get Started,” and Johnny Burke’s “It Could Happen to You.” The latter volume keeps Hinton and Severinsen on some tunes but adds the great vibraphonist Eddie Costa, and baritone saxophonist Stan Webb replaces Adams. The program is equally divided between ballads and swinging modern big-band material, including great arrangements of “Skylark” and “I Fall in Love Too Easily.” If this weren’t enough, to fill out the CD the producers added four numbers from Green’s sextet sessions, including “On a Slow Boat to China” and “Poor Soul,” with some beautiful interplay between the leader and Costa. It seems Lonehill Jazz always does it right.”
Thom Jurek – All Music Guide Review

:: I Hear Music, Modern Music ::

Biography:
Eddie Bert has had a rather long career in jazz and in the studios, managing to go almost unnoticed by all but his fellow musicians. A fine and flexible soloist, Bert has also played a large part behind the scenes, performing his parts quite capably in orchestras. Among his early teachers were fellow trombonists Benny Morton and Trummy Young. In 1940, when he was 18, Bert joined Sam Donahue’s Orchestra, and two years later cut his first solo on record, “Jersey Bounce,” with Red Norvo’s band. Bert gigged with the orchestras of Charlie Barnet (1943) and Woody Herman, performed at a well-recorded Town Hall concert with Norvo in 1944, where he was extensively featured and, after a stint in the military, he worked during the next decade with such orchestras as Herbie Fields, Stan Kenton (1947-1948 and 1950-1951), Benny Goodman (1948-1949), Woody Herman again, and Les Elgart. From 1952-1955, Bert recorded several dates as a leader for Discovery, Savoy, Jazztone, and Trans-World, showing that he could be a personable bop-based improviser in small groups, too. He worked and recorded with Charles Mingus in late 1955, rejoined Goodman in 1957, was part of the ensembles on the various Miles Davis/Gil Evans projects, and performed with Thelonious Monk at his famed big band concerts of 1959 and 1963. In addition to his extensive studio work, Bert was associated with Elliot Lawrence, Chubby Jackson, and again with Mingus; he was part of Dick Cavett’s TV big band from 1968-1972 and toured Europe with the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra. In 1976, he led an obscure effort for the Danish Backbone label and has since headed sessions for Molshajala (a duo album with bassist Steve Roane), Keybone, and Fresh Sound (1987), in addition to recording as a sideman with Lionel Hampton, Sal Salvador, and Teo Macero, among others. In 1997, Eddie Bert toured with T.S. Monk’s Monk on Monk ensemble.

Joe Gordon

Allmusic.com:

A fine bop-oriented trumpeter, Joe Gordon’s tragic death in a fire cut short any chance he had at fame in the jazz world. He became a professional in 1947 and had stints with Georgie Auld, Lionel Hampton, Charlie Parker (on an occasional basis during 1953-1955), Art Blakey (1954), and Don Redman. Gordon was with Dizzy Gillespie’s 1956 big band, touring the Mideast, and getting a solo on “Night in Tunisia.” He was in the Horace Silver quintet, moved back to Boston for a period, and then relocated to Los Angeles where he worked and recorded with Barney Kessel, Benny Carter, Harold Land, Shelly Manne, Dexter Gordon, and Shelly Manne (1958 -1960). Joe Gordon, who led dates for EmArcy (1955) and Contemporary (1961), was on one Thelonious Monk recording and spent his last few years as a freelance musician.
Joe Gordon did not live long, only making it to 35. His second of two recordings as a leader (originally released by Contemporary) finds him on the verge of leading his own group. Gordon wrote all eight of the selections and is joined by adventurous but obscure altoist Jimmy Woods, pianist Dick Whittington, bassist Jimmy Bond, and drummer Milt Turner. Although the solos are generally more memorable than the tunes, this is an excellent effort that hints at what might have been had Joe Gordon lived.
